Kota Kinabalu – “Chess is science, chess ia art and chess is sport,” said Assistant Trade and Industry Miniter, Azhar Matussin.
Quoting a quote from a chess grandmaster, Azhar said the game of chess is a complete element that is able to contribute to human self-development especially among children.
“If chess is cultivated earlier, I believe many children and youth will benefit from the science and art of the game as it is in line with and compliment with the academic learning at school.”
“Co-curricular and academic excellence thus will be enhanced by the development of mental and the way of thinking through chess sport,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Borneo Chess Festival – Borneo International Chess Championship 2018, that was held at the Likas Square Hotel and Apartment Ballroom here on August 5.
Also present was Sabah Chess Association (SCA) president Muammar Julkarnain.
Azhar said that the game of chess, like many other sports could also help to prevent children from getting involved in negative activity and to be a better person in the future.
“Young people will indirectly avoid the unhealthy social influences such as drugs, gangsterism and other negative influences.”
“We as parents and teachers must therefore ensure our next generation will be equipped with the right combination of great attitudes and academic excellence,” he said.
Meanwhile, Azhar congratulated the Sabah Chess Association for their vision in launching the ‘Towards Producing the First Sabah Chess Grandmaster by 2019’ back in 2009.
“I was told that the purpose of their vision is to cultivate the chess sport in Sabah as well as to find future chess grandmaster from Sabah.”
“I believe the efforts by the Sabah Chess Association to materialize the 10-year vision and the quest to cultivate chess sport will come true with their strong commitment and effort.”
“I hope the leadership of the Sabah Chess Association will be able to continue their efforts to generate and boost the development of chess in Sabah and to produce world-class chess player who will represent Malaysia at the International level,” he said.
Meanwhile, SCA president Muammar said that chess is like a song that need a full orchestra to compose a great music.
“Chess is one of the elements to cultivate and escalate the level of thinking, which I believe work hand in hand into academic achievement.”
“In Sabah, we try to develop chess in a comprehensive manner. We do not want to create a world champion, but we want to create a community and society which is excellent in terms of academic, attitudes and sports,” he said.
The Borneo Chess Festival saw more than 300 players from Peninsular, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, China and Philipines competing in both National States Championship (NSC) 2018 and the Borneo International Chess Championship (BICC) 2018, which began on August 1.
